Your gums are so important to us – they’re the foundation for your teeth! Periodontal disease, also known as ‘gum disease’, is prevalent across America. It is caused by bacteria that release a soft buildup material, or “plaque”, on your teeth and gums which can harden and turn into calculus or tartar–a hard, calcified buildup material. Together, bacteria, plaque, and calculus affect the health of your gums, teeth, and bone.

You can cure gingivitis by having a good dental hygiene; brushing and flossing your teeth correctly every day, and visiting a professional (dental hygienist). If gingivitis is not taken care correctly it can become periodontitis.
Periodontitis is an inflammation around the tooth. Plaque accumulates below the gums affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth, causing them to fall or loosen out.
Many people think of periodontal disease as an adult problem, but it can affect children and adolescents too. Studies from periodontists show that nearly all children and adolescents have gingivitis, which is the first stage of periodontal disease. Advanced forms of periodontal disease are less common in children than adults, but they can occur.
