Minerals like fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited to the enamel through remineralization when we consume food and water that contain these minerals.
Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in many foods and in water. It helps prevent tooth decay by making your teeth more resistant to the acid attacks of plaque and sugars in the mouth. Fluoride can also fight early tooth decay. Because fluoride helps prevent cavities, it is an ingredient in many toothpastes, mouth washes, and other dental products. When you come in for a teeth cleaning appointment, our doctors may recommend fluoride therapy.
In our office, fluoride can be applied to your teeth in a gel, foam, or varnish form. These treatments contain a higher concentration of fluoride than can be found in toothpaste or mouth wash. Fluoride in a varnish form is painted on the teeth. Foams are applied via a mouth guard. Gels are painted onto your teeth.
